First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Bloomingdale's.
Sales Lead
I applied online and the next day got an email to schedule a group interview. When I got there, I was the only one. I talked with the dept. manager for 1.5 hours and she wanted me to meet with another mgr. A week later, I spoke with a different mgr (I think she was higher up) for less than 30 mins. She asked about draw vs. commission. I asked when they wanted to fill the position and she said a couple of weeks, which made me think they weren't too keen on hiring me.
- Can you introduce yourself?
- What would you do with a team member who wasn't selling effectively?
- Describe a situation where you had a great customer experience.

It takes a long time, or at least it used to. I went through 6 different interviews before I got hired. They want people who can sell and have a certain knowledge on their field, for example, fashion, fine jewelry, housewares, furniture, etc. These days they seem to have relaxed the standards, and that is something that reflects on the company. Years ago, they really made you go though loops to even get a second interview.
- They want experienced people on the field you are applying to. So they will ask you how much of it you have, and they would ask you to say what you bring to the table.
Sales Professional
After applying online they set up an in-person interview with the HR manager. Since I knew someone who worked at the store, the interview was pretty straightforward with the referral. At the end of this in-person interview, we set up a second interview with the department manager a few days later. This interview was quick and easy, very casual. She offered me the job at the end and asked when I could start. I accepted and came back to complete the paperwork a few days later.
- Can you describe what constitutes good customer service?
- What motivates your interest in working at Bloomingdales?
- Could you share an experience of handling a difficult customer?
