First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Bloomingdale's.
Assistant Manager
I had a great experience with the hiring staff. They were friendly and provided helpful information. The store location was beautiful. They asked very good questions and provided great insights, plus nice perks. They thanked me for my time and were very polite.
- Describe how you would manage a difficult on-floor situation.
Management Trainee
The hiring process spanned a week. I met with the general manager for an interview as part of the management trainee program. Unfortunately, there were no openings for that specific program at the time, so they extended an immediate job offer to me as a salesperson, with the possibility of an opening in the management trainee program arising sooner.
- Can you share your experiences in retail?
Loss Prevention Manager
My first chat was with the Bloomingdale's recruiter on the phone, lasted about an hour and ten minutes, and it went really well. Then, I had another interview with the same recruiter at the home office in NYC, right after meeting with one of the HR Executives. Both ladies were super nice, detailed, accommodating, and professional. The day after, I sent a thank you email and got a reply saying they'd let me know about the next step. I didn't hear anything for another 2-3 weeks until the recruiter called to set up the next interview on Long Island (a 2.5-hour drive each way) to meet the hiring manager. This interview was pretty standard, no weird questions except for one: 'What would you do to staff your team?' This caught me off guard because my last job only allowed us to interview and hire, not recruit. HR handled all the recruiting and scheduling. I tried to get the hiring manager's contact info to send a thank you but never heard back from the recruiter after reaching out. I thought that was it, but another 2-3 weeks passed before the Central HR Executive Recruiter called to schedule interview #5 back in NYC, followed by an assessment test. The interview was the same old stuff, mostly about me, all legitimate questions. Then came the assessment. I thought it'd be a basic skills test, but it turned out to be 5 different personality/psychological tests, around 200 questions total, repeating the same inquiries with different wording. I took this test in a tiny, hot room with another guy. The recruiter said I had until 6 pm, and it was 12:30 pm. After the test, which asked things like 'I NEVER get angry when a co-worker yells at me,' I got a call 2-3 weeks later saying they hired someone with more experience. The recruiter insisted the test results weren't a factor. I sent thank you emails to everyone I met but got no response. Oddly, the job keeps getting reposted online. In total, I spent about $169 on gas and tolls over 2.5 months to be misled, and I would have preferred to be told I bombed the test.
- What was your strategy for hiring new people for your team?
- Tell me about yourself.
- I NEVER get angry when a co-worker yells at me. Do you: STRONGLY agree... Moderately Agree... Moderately Disagree... STRONGLY Disagree.
