I found the job posting online and applied through the company's website. Even though the job was in New York, the HR folks I chatted with were mostly in San Francisco. I did the same writing test and phone interview that others have mentioned. Then, I had a Skype interview because I'm not local. It was with one support person from the New York office; apparently, someone else was supposed to join but didn't. He had a few questions, and it was shorter than expected, but I felt it went pretty well. Afterward, my recruiter, Beth, called and asked me some unexpected questions, including what I enjoyed learning about during the interview. I was a bit flustered because my phone never rings!, but I think I managed okay. She said she'd call back early the next week but actually called at the end of the week to say they chose someone else. She was really nice about it. I thought they were hiring more than one person, but it sounds like it was just for one position. It's hard to keep track, but I spoke with about six different people throughout the process.

I got contacted by a staffing agency and after answering some questions they submitted my application to Square. Then I had a 3-round in-person interview at Square. The interviewer seemed a bit cold, she briefly introduced herself and mentioned her recent promotion to manager in January. She asked 3 general questions: tell me about yourself, preferred shift, and a time I received constructive criticism (which I repeated to make sure I heard her right). I shared a quick story from my current job. Immediately after, she asked me to return my badge. As I did, I saw her ripping up my resume and throwing it away, looking surprised I saw her. With my paralegal degree, professional licenses, management experience, and call center background, I was shocked not to move forward, especially since I've conducted interviews myself and know what employers seek. Maybe she was having an off day or we just didn't click.

The whole thing took about 3 weeks from start to finish. First, there was a written part, then a phone screen, and then an in-person interview. Mine happened to be a group interview, but I'm not sure if they still do that often. The written part was pretty straightforward. I had to explain how to make scrambled eggs via email and share my customer service philosophy. The phone screen was also pretty basic. They asked my customer service philosophy again and then we did a role-play of a phone call. The role-play was easy because we went over the details beforehand, so even if you didn't know what Square did, the answers were basically handed to you. It was more about how you sounded on the phone than getting the answers right. Lastly, I had a group interview, which I don't think they do as much anymore. This was back in January 2016, so things have probably changed. My group had about 30 people, and we were split into smaller groups of 5-6. Then, 5 different leads came in and asked some pretty basic interview questions, like about dealing with coworkers or solving tough problems. After the group interview, it took about 5-7 days to hear back that I got the job.
