I first applied through their website and was happy that my resume was viewed within 10 days and I got an interview request. I did more research on Square's revenue streams and potential Asian market expansion, feeling prepared. However, I was surprised and anxious to find out the interview was a recorded video instead of a live Skype call. This brought back my camera shyness and anxiety. Although I practiced the "tell us about yourself" question multiple times in their practice round, I found the one-minute prep and one-minute recording time for each question very challenging, especially since I had to write down my answers to avoid freezing. I felt like I repeated myself between the "Why Square?" and "Why Account Management?" questions, as my answer focused on my background helping small businesses grow with Square, and I was unsure if I even conveyed that properly within the time limit. The introductory and concluding videos about the company culture were great, but I wished for more direct interaction with Square and less emphasis on recording, especially for camera-shy individuals. I felt the process was too impersonal, and I barely knew my interviewer. Ultimately, I received a rejection, with feedback that other applicants were a better fit.

So first there was a quick call with a recruiter, like 10 minutes. Then I had a longer call, 30 mins, with the team lead. After that, I did a mock demo with the team leads. Then another 1-on-1 interview with another account manager. The last step was an onsite where I met three other account managers, did a Q&A with the team leads, and met the head of the department. The whole thing took about a month from start to finish.

The interview process started with a recruiter call, which I felt went well. The recruiter indicated I would proceed to the second and final round. This final round was a lengthy 2.5-hour session. I thought I performed well with most interviewers, but not with the hiring manager, who seemed uninterested in my resume and background. The interview structure felt odd, especially since the hiring manager has the final say but candidates only get 15 minutes to speak with them. In a typical interview, if the hiring manager isn't interested, the interview is usually shorter. Block's process doesn't allow this, and after my brief chat, I realized she wasn't keen on my experience. Despite doing well in other parts, I felt my chances were slim and the time spent after the HM chat was a waste. My suggestion to Block is to have a dedicated HM-led interview before the 2.5-hour block to save everyone's time.
