Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Blizzard Entertainment.
Concept Artist
I got contacted by a recruiter who asked me to apply. A few days later, I had a chat with the hiring manager and another team member. We talked about the role and did a quick pre-screen before setting up more interviews. They decided against an art test because my portfolio was good and our schedules lined up. So, they set up two panel interviews for the next week. Both were an hour long. The first panel had a creative director, an art lead, and a modelling artist. We mostly talked about my workflow and how I think. The second panel was with the people I'd be working with. They asked about my experience and process, but this team also asked some bigger picture questions about my career goals and how I see the industry. It felt more like a free-flowing conversation where people chimed in when they wanted, not a strict list of questions. Overall, both panels were focused on behavioral stuff or questions about art style and thinking.
- Could you walk me through your typical workflow?
- What inspired you to get into this line of work?
- What aspects of this particular project appeal to you?

It was a really long interview process. I felt like I met almost everyone on the team. They seemed to like my portfolio and were primarily focused on assessing my personality and how well I'd fit in. Concept art roles aren't typically very technical, and employers can usually gauge your artistic abilities from your submitted work. They really value passion for their games and the company, so it's important to be familiar with their titles and capable of discussing them intelligently. As a concept artist, it's crucial to stay updated on popular culture and its artistic trends.
- How would you approach creating a concept for a specific item or character if asked?

Two interviewers from the company visited my university to find artists for internships. Around a dozen students from my school, including myself, were interviewed for about 15 minutes each. While one interviewer was pleasant, the other was quite rude and demeaning. This experience made me feel like the company culture might not be very friendly, and I'm no longer inclined to pursue employment there.
- Could you describe your ideal role?
