Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at BioMarin Pharmaceutical.
Senior Manager
It was a pretty well-organized interview process, with several rounds involving senior management. However, the entire process stretched out to over two months, which felt a bit lengthy.
- Tell me about a time you managed a critical project under a tight deadline.
Manager
I went through several interview rounds, and they were really good about telling me what each one was for. The whole experience was super respectful and didn't feel stressful at all. There was a face-to-face meeting with some Senior Leadership folks, and it finished up with a culture fit interview.
- They really wanted to hear about my people management skills and how I've worked with other departments or how I would.
- Tell me about your experience working cross-functionally.
- How do you collaborate with other teams?
Manager
I sent in my application online and the recruiter reached out. After we chatted on the phone, she scheduled another phone interview for the next week with the hiring manager. He asked some solid questions and was keen on hearing about my experience with projections. He mentioned he'd get back to me in 2-3 days. Since I didn't hear anything after three days, I followed up with the recruiter. She then informed me that the manager wanted me to come in for an all-day interview, which included a 45-minute presentation. This was set for two weeks later. I had to check in with the recruiter about the tech setup for the presentation. On the interview day, I was given a new schedule. I'm not sure why that wasn't emailed beforehand, it would have been much better communication. Everyone I met during the interview was really nice. They asked good questions and seemed genuinely interested in me. About a week later, I contacted HR and got no reply. I followed up again the next week, still nothing. It wasn't until the third week, when I mentioned I had another offer, that they finally told me they were hiring someone else. I was pretty bummed about the lack of communication from HR. I invested a full day and prepared a presentation, so I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a quick email or call to get updates. If you get an interview, make sure to ask about their follow-up process and what to expect. I was trying to be laid-back, but I honestly felt a bit foolish. My rating of the interview experience isn't about the difficulty of the questions, but rather the intensity of interviewing all day and preparing a 45-minute presentation, which was a significant time commitment.
- Could you explain your interest in BioMarin?
