First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Billabong.
Apparel Designer
The first interviewer I spoke with was from HR and was very friendly. They clearly explained the role they were trying to fill, the company's benefits, and the goals I would need to meet. Then, in the second interview, I spoke with the Head of Product, and it was a really demeaning experience. The way that woman treated me poorly while reading my CV and learning about my experience at the same time I was talking to her was unlike anything that had ever happened to me before.
- Do you have any questions for me?
Sales Associate
I applied in the store and got a call about a week later. I went in for an interview with a manager. We talked about challenges in my past jobs, my personal traits, and why I wanted to work at Billabong. He mentioned there would be two interviews and he'd call if I got a second interview. I got a call that night for a second interview two days later. This second interview was tougher, with similar questions asked in different ways to make it challenging. She said she would call if I got the job, but I never heard back.
- What other brands besides Billabong are sold here?
Designer
We started with a WhatsApp contact, no formal communication channels. The first interview was with HR, then a second one with the team lead and members. Technical interviews were basic, with no signs of preparation from the team: very simple questions, no prior review of the CV or portfolio. When asked about work processes, methodologies, or team dynamics, there were no clear or defined answers. We moved to the pre-employment check with a confirmed start date, before completing stages like the psychometric test (done later, with no apparent impact on the decision). The administrative process was entirely on paper: documents submitted in person, no digital copies available until requested.
- They focused on very basic aspects, such as tool proficiency and general profile inquiries.
- There were no opportunities to deeply assess technical skills, design judgment, or problem-solving abilities.
Sales Assistant
Applied via Seek and got called the next week, offered an interview for 2 days later. Interview went for roughly 15 minutes and included generic "about you" questions, as well as questions relevant to the company and working requirements. Dealing with customers and how you would make sales was also included.
- What would you do if a customer didn't suit an item but asked for your opinion?
