Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Big 5 Sporting Goods.
Cashier
Applied online, then got a call to set up an interview. It was in person, and I dressed professionally. They asked me stuff about my sales experience, cashier experience, and any experience with sports. The questions felt like they were just reading from a script, pretty standard for a retail job interview.
- Tell me about your experience with sporting goods.
- What previous experience do you have with sales?
- What previous experience do you have with cashier work?
Cashier
I applied online and then I got a call about two weeks later to come in for an interview. The manager was really friendly. They asked me about my work experience, my sports experience and if I'd be able to handle the job. I figured out I didn't get the job when they said they were still interviewing other people. Nice guy though.
- Could you handle working in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment?
Cashier
Big 5 takes walk-in applications for jobs. They usually have signs saying 'Now Hiring.' I went in one evening and the general manager was there. He was really nice and asked about my past work. Within a week, another manager and the head cashier interviewed me. They asked about my background and if I had sales experience. I got a call with a job offer by the end of that week. The interview felt a little scary but I thought the company's mission and expectations were good. There was a lot of paperwork, but that's pretty normal for a franchise business.
- What would you sell alongside specific sports merchandise?
- What items would you recommend to someone purchasing baseball gloves?
- What do you know about what we sell?
