Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at BetterUp.
Senior Recruiter
So the interview process was pretty structured, really thorough, but man, it felt like it took forever. Started with a quick chat with the recruiter, then I talked to the hiring manager. After that, there were a few more rounds of interviews, met about 5 or 6 people total. There was also a take-home assignment and I even spoke with the Chief People Officer. Everyone I met was really nice and thoughtful, they asked some challenging but fair questions that definitely showed me the company has high standards.
- Can you share examples of how you've tackled recruitment challenges?
- How do you approach establishing robust relationships with stakeholders?
- Walk me through a situation where you developed a new process or strategy.
Recruiter
I interviewed for a recruiting position and had a really bad first screen. The recruiter seemed uninterested and cold from the start, making the conversation feel dismissive. I was excited about the job, so it was disappointing to feel like my time wasn't valued. The recruiter didn't share anything about the role or company, just jumped straight into questions without introductions. This felt weird and uninviting. They didn't even let me ask questions, and it seemed like they'd already decided I wasn't a fit. If this is how candidates are treated, it's a red flag for the company's culture and hiring process. It was a frustrating and disappointing experience, and I definitely don't want to work there.
- Describe a situation where you improved the hiring process for a role that had been open for six months.
Technical Recruiter
The process was great, I really enjoyed getting to meet with the team members I would be working with day to day. Everyone was very welcoming and extremely passionate about the work they are doing. It was one of the best interview processes I have ever gone through. We started with an introduction call with a recruiting manager, then a 30 minute call with a member of the team. After that, an onsite interview with 4-5 members of the team, and finally an executive interview with the VP.
- Can you share an instance where a relationship with a hiring manager deteriorated?
