Better Software Engineer Interview Questions
& Process

Did an online pair coding exercise with questions similar to medium leetcode problems. They also talked about my resume projects and experience. I heard back a few days later about moving on to the next stage, which was supposed to be an onsite with better.com engineers. There was also an hour-long Q&A info session. Then about a week later, they mentioned they were pausing recruitment and I never heard back.

I learned about Better through GHC 21 and was invited to do an online assessment on Codility. After passing that, I got an interview invitation within two days and scheduled it for the earliest possible date. The interview felt very welcoming, like I was already part of the team. There was no pressure, and they had a structured approach for both a behavioral round and a coding round on coderpad. I received an offer just three days later, including the weekend.

First, I had to do a Codility coding test that I had 1.5 hours to complete. It had 3 problems that were pretty easy to medium difficulty. You find out your score immediately after you finish, based on how many test cases you pass and how much each problem is worth. After passing that, I was offered a final interview. It was a 2 hour zoom call. The first hour was a behavioral interview with one engineer, and the second hour was a technical interview with another engineer. The behavioral interview was super casual and had really standard questions. My interviewer admitted it was their first time doing an interview and they were writing down my answers to pass along to whoever makes the final decision. The technical interviewer was a mid-to-senior level engineer who had only been there 3 months. There was no actual coding, they just had me talk through some functions they had written and answer questions about two topics I picked. I got an email a week later saying I didn't get the job from someone I never spoke to, and they wouldn't give any feedback because of their 'privacy policy'. It was a decent experience overall, my interviewers were nice, but it was kinda strange not knowing who was deciding, that the interviewers seemed new, and that there was no coding in the technical part.
