Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at BCG Digital Ventures.
User Experience Designer
First, I had a chat with the recruiter. Then came the take-home exercise, which was quite involved and needed a good amount of research, but they gave us ample time. After that, I was invited to their office in Los Angeles, which was super helpful since I don't live there. The onsite day had several interviews. The recruiter who was there was really nice, making things feel pretty relaxed. They really dug into our skills and what we could do. A big part of it was discussing the take-home exercise, especially the research, because they emphasized how crucial that is for their consulting work. I heard back about an offer not too long after the onsite. It was a great experience overall.
- What alternative approaches did you consider for this feature?
- Could you walk me through your decision-making process for this feature's design?
User Experience Designer
I was invited for an on-site presentation where I had to present a design challenge to a cross-functional team. It was set up like a real venture innovation or incubation project team. After the presentation, I had one-on-one meetings with each team member, including venture architects, product management, strategic design, and experience design. Design leaders asked design-specific questions, while the non-design folks focused more on my communication skills with different functions. They weren't super technical questions, but it's good to research each role and the company's org structure (like BCGDV's) to anticipate stakeholder concerns and prepare potential questions.
- Can you explain how you evaluated different design directions and made the decision to proceed with the one you presented?
UI-UX Designer
First, I had a screening call with a recruiter. Then, I had a call with the Design lead. After that, I was given a design exercise that took me two days to complete. The topic was very open-ended, more like service design, and I had a lot of freedom to explore solutions. However, after I submitted my work, they said my process and the design result weren't consistent. I knew my process wasn't entirely consistent from start to finish, but I thought I could explain my decisions during the presentation. But, they rejected me without letting me present. The challenge was exploratory and discovery-based, so I expected there to be experimentation, learning, and adjustments, not necessarily a simple, linear path to the outcome. They rejected me outright.
- What is your desired salary range?
