First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Barr Engineering.
Environmental Engineer
Applied for the job, and it took a few months to get an interview. Had 3 interviews total (the last 2 back-to-back on the same day). The whole thing from scheduling the first interview to getting an offer took about a month or so. First up was a 1-hour phone call with HR and an environmental engineer. Mostly asked about my resume and if I was really into the job and company. Got a call about a week later to set up the next two interviews, which they scheduled for the same day, one right after the other. The second interview was a 1-hour Teams call with 3 environmental engineers. Lots of 'tell me about a time when' questions. The third interview happened immediately after the second. It was a 1.5-hour call with an HR person and an environmental engineer. This one was super conversational and really depended on me having good questions prepared. Got the offer about 1-2 weeks after that. Everyone was really nice, welcoming, and knew their stuff!
- Can you share an instance where you had a disagreement with a colleague or supervisor?
- Which project that you worked on is your favorite and why?
- What is your motivation for relocating to this city?
Environmental Scientist
The interview started with a phone call, and then there was supposed to be an in person interview. I didn't get selected for the in person interview, so this is just about the phone call. Three employers were on the call with me, and they were all very nice and friendly. The questions were reasonable, but the interview was pretty long, lasting an hour, and towards the end, I had trouble understanding the questions. Overall, it was a good experience, though I personally like face-to-face interviews better because it's easier to explain technical answers when you can see the interviewers. It's hard to tell if they're getting what I'm saying without seeing their reactions.
- Can you tell me about a situation where you had to explain technical information to someone without a technical background?
- What would your previous employer identify as your biggest strength and your biggest weakness?
Environmental Engineer / Chemical Engineer
Had a phone interview with two people, an HR person and a senior chemical engineer. They asked mainly about my previous internship experience. The interview was supposed to be an hour, but it only lasted 15 minutes, and they spent about 10 minutes explaining the role and the company. I got to ask questions at the end, and they answered everything clearly. It was a good overall experience, but it felt like they were looking for someone with more experience.
- Could you describe your favorite project?
- Could you describe your least favorite project?
- Can you walk me through your internship experience?
Chemical Engineer
This interview felt more like a subjective fit assessment, mostly open-ended questions which made it difficult to gauge performance. It started with a phone screening with both an HR rep and an engineer. The questions were mainly behavioral/STAR-based, along with some about job preferences and generic 'Have you ever done x' type questions that weren't specifically tailored to my background. They left about 15 minutes at the end for my questions.
- Can you walk me through your resume and experience?
- Tell me about a situation where you had to analyze a significant amount of data.
- How do you approach resolving conflicts in the workplace?
