Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Baker McKenzie.
Trainee Solicitor
It involved quite a few steps like an initial HR call, a case study, and some tests. Honestly, it was one of the most challenging interview processes I've been through. This was during the pandemic, and I really didn't enjoy the online interviews.
- What are your 5-year career aspirations?
- What motivates your desire to become a solicitor?
Trainee Solicitor
I completed a vacation scheme and then had a training contract interview at the end. This interview was with two partners I hadn't worked with during the scheme. The partners in my interview were honestly really awful, and made me feel incredibly uncomfortable and seemed to scoff at everything I said. This was shocking as it was completely different to the culture of the firm that I had been exposed to during the vacation scheme. My feedback was extremely positive from the departments and people I had actually worked for, and the only reason I was not offered the training contract was due to the interview, where I felt stifled and ridiculed for an hour. Never experienced anything like that before or subsequently at any other firm.
- What are your key takeaways from the vacation scheme experience?
Trainee Solicitor
It's best to apply when there are openings, but even if not, you can still apply and they might contact you later when a position opens up. It's advisable to apply directly to the partner leading the practice area you're interested in and follow up politely about your application status. You'll typically have one interview or test, or both, with that partner. If you get through that, the managing partner will interview you next. The whole process, from application to offer, can take a few months.
- Can you tell me about your prior work experience and your outlook on the legal field, including your thoughts on work-life balance?
- What are your views on the legal profession and work-life balance?
- Regarding your experience and perspective on the legal profession, how do you feel about work-life balance?
