Aha! Customer Success Manager interviews, decoded.

My first round was with a recruiter, but I didn't get past it because I lacked GTM experience. They seemed to be looking for specific product management experience for this role, which struck me as odd since it wasn't a PM position.

The interview process started with a screener interview where they asked high-level questions about my experience as a PM. This led to a second round where they asked more detailed PM questions. At the end, they gave me immediate feedback that my experience didn't align with the gap they were trying to fill, which I really appreciated. This was one of the best experiences I've had during my job hunt, especially compared to other roles where I haven't heard back in weeks.

It started with a screening call from HR/Recruiting, followed by a chat with someone from the customer success team. It was mostly standard Q&A about my work history. They told me at the end I wouldn't be moving forward because they didn't think I had enough product strategy experience. This was despite me having just built a product team and process from scratch and being at a director level. They wouldn't budge even when I showed them org structures, strategic alignment, product flows, collateral, etc. It was frustrating because I interview often to stay sharp, so hearing no isn't new, but hearing it for that reason made it feel age-based rather than about my experience or aptitude.
