Senior Software Engineer
Got a cold email from the internal recruiter. Had an initial call with them where they gave a basic overview of the job. A week later, I had a semi-technical phone screen with potential team members. They asked about my past experiences, some basic domain knowledge (JavaScript, Angular 2+, Node), and explained the job duties in more detail. Another week later, I had about a two-hour onsite interview with the same team members. On top of more domain knowledge questions (JS, Angular, Node, SQL), I had to do a line-by-line code walkthrough of their product. Also had a quick chat with some data science folks. At the end of the onsite, the recruiter mentioned they were interviewing others and I should hear back next week. I ended up waiting about four weeks, but the recruiter gave me weekly updates. After the fourth week, the recruiter called and said I got the job over other candidates, and we discussed salary. But then, I had to go back onsite for a final 45-minute behavioral interview with about six people. Apparently, my answers weren't good enough because a week later, the recruiter told me they weren't moving forward. The technical interviews were straightforward if you knew the tech, but the recruiter's dishonesty about wait times and the offer 'revocation' felt like a waste of time.
- Could you do a walkthrough of two files of code (one in Angular 2+ and one in Node) and explain what's happening in them?
- Explain what's going on in the code for two files (Angular 2+ and Node).
Engineer
There were 3 interviews on different days: a phone screen, a one-on-one, and a behavioral interview. The phone interview was with the hiring manager, who asked general questions about my background and interests. They also spent a lot of time explaining the company and the role. The one-on-one involved talking to 4 engineering department heads, each for about 30 minutes. My hiring manager and 3 other managers conducted these interviews, depending on their schedules. The final interview was with a panel of about 6 people. I'd recommend looking up behavioral interview questions online and practicing them, as the ones they asked were very similar.
- Can you share an example of how you collaborate within a team?
Staff Accountant
Applied online, then had a behavioral phone interview with HR staff about a week later where they also asked about salary expectations. Two days after that, I had a phone interview with the CFO and Controller who mainly asked about my background and Excel abilities. They said HR would contact me in a week or two, but they didn't. So, I left HR a voicemail. Two weeks after that, HR called me back and emailed me about an in-person interview. Three weeks after the phone interview, I had the in-person interview with the CFO and Controller. They asked about my past experience and if I minded working overtime. They were pretty relaxed and we had a good conversation. They said I'd meet the accounting staff for 30 minutes and then have a behavioral interview in their big meeting room. After meeting the accounting staff and discussing my experience, they said the meeting room was occupied and I'd have to come back in a week or two. I didn't hear back after two weeks, so I emailed HR. The next day, I got a rejection email.
- Tell me about a time you dealt with a challenging situation.
- Describe your proficiency with Excel.
- What was the most challenging project you've undertaken?
Recruiter
I had a 45-minute phone screen that went really well. Then, the HR Recruiter contacted me for the next step, an in-person interview with the HR Director. During that interview, the HR Director asked me questions directly from a list, which felt very transactional and not very conversational. As a recruiter myself, I wouldn't have conducted an interview that way. Despite that, I guess I did well enough to advance to a panel interview. In the panel, the HR Recruiter asked me behavioral questions, and I was interviewed by the HR Recruiter along with 6 other people (3 women, 3 men). It was intimidating because I wasn't expecting it, and it felt more like an interrogation than a friendly chat. An engineer was also present and seemed disengaged. I left feeling okay but without a strong positive impression. I sent thank you emails to the Recruiter and Director. Only the recruiter responded. I didn't get the position, but they thought I'd be a better fit for a different recruiter role. They asked if I was interested, I said yes, and then... crickets. That was fun.
- Tell me about yourself and your experiences in recruitment.
