First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at ZipRealty.
Front End Engineer
It began with several phone screenings. After the technical phone interview, I was given a take-home challenge to replicate a webpage layout from a picture using HTML and CSS. Once I submitted that, I was invited for an onsite panel interview. The onsite involved meeting with about 10-12 people in individual sessions, each with two interviewers. They asked pretty much the same questions repeatedly, making the 3.5-hour onsite feel like it could have been done in an hour. The actual technical questions and whiteboarding were saved for the last session, which was a bit tiring by then. They said I'd hear back within 48 hours after the onsite, but I never did, which I found unprofessional.
- Tell me about yourself and why you're interested in this role.
- Can you describe your experience from past positions?
- Could you create a debounce function?
Real Estate Agent
I had a formal interview with the director. It was very cordial. They asked me about my background, sphere of influence, educational background and my Real Estate experience. They also asked how long I was looking for a new position and why I was leaving my present agency. I told them that my previous agency was successful but small and I needed more opportunities which were not available. I mentioned that I needed additional clients and formal training to be successful and also wanted a team environment, which Zip delivered on in a big way. They told me about the company and offered me a position on the spot. I accepted and worked there until it closed.

Java Engineer
After passing the technical screen over the phone, I was invited on-site. The team seemed very friendly, with nice people. Most of the discussion revolved around my resume. I had 4 interviews there. The last interview was conducted by two interviewers who I believe lacked manners. One interviewer seemed confrontational and didn't know how to iterate a for loop, which was surprising for someone around 50 and still in a senior software engineer position. I suspect her negative attitude and limited knowledge might be the reason for her position. Everyone else was great, though.
- Find pairs in an array that sum up to a given number, and return an array of their indices.
Real Estate Agent
I got a call from the Recruiter and it was super nice and helpful. She found the earliest time for me to chat with the PBZ Manager. After she asked me a few things, she said I was a good fit to meet the Manager. Meeting with the Manager was great, I really saw the value and was eager to start. It meant a lot to me that she was so available.
- What made you decide to become a Realtor?
- In one year, where do you envision yourself professionally?
- Are you seeking part-time or full-time employment?
