Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Zenefits.
Account Executive
I went through 3 interviews, each lasting 30 minutes and felt rushed. The recruiter was friendly, and I met with two managers and a director. I couldn't ask my questions because they rushed me to the next person. They also couldn't answer tough questions about the company's performance. They seemed inexperienced, and I heard from friends that it's a boiler room with high turnover, where they hire a lot and fire the bottom 50%. While I wasn't worried about that affecting me, it's understandable given how they barely got to know me. The feedback on my performance didn't even match our discussions or my strengths.
- Can you walk me through your career journey so far?
Account Executive
Applied online and got a call back the same week. Had a quick 20-minute phone screen a few days later where the recruiter asked about my background and interest in Zenefits, then explained the company and role. Next, I went to an on-site interview in Scottsdale, which was about 1.5 hours. I met with three people: first, someone who asked about my background, tech experience, and Salesforce experience. Then, the Director of Sales asked more detailed questions about why I wanted the job, my interest in insurance, and behavioral questions. Finally, a sales manager asked similar questions, really focusing on my past sales experience. They were clear that the job is demanding and has a learning curve, especially without insurance knowledge, but the compensation is great, and being part of a startup is a big draw. The base pay was good, commissions were tied to sign-ups, and stock options were available. Benefits were okay. Snacks and drinks were provided. The team seemed genuine and driven.
- Can you explain what Zenefits is to someone you might meet casually, like at a bar?
- In under 30 seconds, how would you pitch Zenefits to someone?
Account Executive
A recruiter reached out to set up a phone chat. The recruiter was nice, but since it's a phone interview, you gotta do your homework first. Make sure you've got questions ready and ask "what happens next?" If you pass that, there's a 1.5 hour in-person interview. I met with two SMB sales managers and the Director of Sales. They're looking for someone who's motivated by more than just money; you need to grasp the bigger picture and be enthusiastic about the company's direction and how it fits with your career goals. They interview a lot of people, so you need to let your personality and achievements shine through to stand out. I got a call with an offer in less than 24 hours, and I took it. For this job, you need to be a licensed insurance broker, and that test must be passed before you start.
- Can you describe the type of employee you are?
- What makes you want to work in sales?
