Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Yale University.
Administrative Assistant
I heard back from them about a week after my info got to the hiring manager. The next interview was 4 business days after that. Then, for 3 weeks, I heard nothing, until I got an automated rejection. It left a bad taste because I usually get a personalized rejection with feedback after getting so far. They also ignored my two emails with follow-up questions even though they said to email them with any questions.
- Can you describe your ideal work environment?
Administrative Assistant
We'll start with some general questions to get to know you better, like telling us about yourself, why you picked Yale, and what you're most proud of. We'll also ask about your accomplishments, how you spend your free time, your strengths and weaknesses, and your future aspirations. We're also curious about your ideal job and preferred work environment, and how your friends see you. We'll also touch on who you admire. Then we'll move on to questions specific to this role, like what makes you a great fit, what interests you about a career in this field, and why this specific position appeals to you. We want to know what in your background makes you qualified, how this organization stands out from others, and what you think are the biggest challenges facing the industry and our organization. Finally, we'll dive into your leadership experiences, asking you to walk us through your resume and elaborate on your leadership roles, their responsibilities, the most difficult projects you've handled, and how you've motivated others, built shared goals, and fostered a supportive environment.
- What personal traits make you stand out for this role?
Administrative Assistant
The interview was really formal, almost like a court hearing. The hiring manager just read questions for over an hour, no real conversation or chance to connect personally. It felt less like an interview for an admin job in the Humanities department and more like I was being interrogated. They need to realize they have to attract candidates, not just expect people to beg for the job. I even withdrew my application after that tough first round, even though I'm an internal candidate with almost ten years at Yale. It's always a bit of a red flag when these desirable, unionized admin roles go to outside people.
- Can you share an example of a challenging situation you've faced and how you dealt with it?
- Walk me through how you manage competing tasks and deadlines.
- How do you ensure the confidentiality of sensitive information?
