First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Y-12 National Security Complex.
Mechanical Engineer
The interview process involved a first interview that was behavioral and focused on conflict resolution and working in a culturally diverse environment. The second interview was technical, during which I solved several word problems over the phone with the interviewer.
- Can you share an instance where you had a disagreement with a coworker from a different cultural or religious background and explain how you resolved it?
Chemical Process Engineer
I had one video interview, and it was pretty much all STAR questions. It went for about 50 minutes. Then, two days later, a recruiter called me with the job offer. It was a good experience overall. Just remember to have some paper with talking points about your projects and accomplishments ready to discuss.
- Can you share an instance where you had a conflict with a colleague?
Field Metrology Engineer
I sat down with a panel of 2 engineers and a union rep. It started with some casual chat to break the ice. Then, they asked me 6 questions using the STAR method. After that, they asked some open-ended questions, saying there were no right or wrong answers, to figure out what kind of engineer I am. The interview was supposed to be an hour, but it went a bit longer, about an hour and a half. The people were really nice and friendly, making it feel like a relaxed conversation with potential coworkers.
- Can you share an experience where you disagreed with another engineer on a major project, and explain how you resolved it and what happened in the end?
Project Manager
So, the interview experience was super impersonal, right? I got an email for a virtual panel interview with 4 people. No recruiter or HR chat beforehand, which was weird. They said cameras had to be on, but then 3 out of the 4 panelists were just black boxes, no faces! They barely talked or asked anything, just read off a list of basic behavioral questions. It felt totally robotic and strange. They didn't really ask me to go deeper into my answers or anything. Honestly, it felt like they already had someone picked and were just going through the motions for me, like a CYA thing to hit their hiring quota. I sent a thank you note but haven't heard back. Y-12 has a good rep, but this interview made me doubt it. It's a two-way street, you know? Candidates want to see if they want to work there too. At least turn on your camera!
- What motivates you to want to join our company?
- Can you describe a situation where you had a disagreement with a colleague?
- Which Project Management software do you find most effective?
