Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Xcel Energy.
Manager
It was a panel interview with behavioral questions related to the job. The interviews are one hour long, and there was time for questions about the role. I'd recommend having specific examples ready.
- Can you share an instance where you juggled multiple priorities?
Change Manager
Recruiter reached out about a role, asked me to submit a resume and had a quick chat. They made it sound like an interview would be scheduled soon. I spent 3 hours updating my resume and applying via their clunky portal. Then, complete radio silence from the recruiter, followed by an automated rejection from the system. No one followed up. It was a complete waste of my time, and based on this experience, I won't be applying to Xcel again.
- Could you describe your typical process for managing the onboarding of change initiatives?
Senior Manager
The hiring process started with a phone call from HR. After that, I was flown out for a lunch interview. They gave me a verbal offer the very next day. The overall hiring process is a bit of a hassle, though. The company uses a health network for drug screening, which was a bit awkward and inconvenient because I had to go to a somewhat sketchy clinic they work with. Onboarding involves mostly computer-based training for your badge, but the leadership and new hire training is more traditional, with instructors. It feels like it should be optional for most people, but they don't make it that way.
- Can you share an example of a challenging situation you encountered?
- What's your approach to resolving disagreements with colleagues?
- Walk me through a project you managed from beginning to end.
