First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Worcester Polytech.
Administrative Assistant
I had an in-person interview with two professors. One was nice and professional, but the other was rude and arrogant. He kept looking at my resume, then asking why I wanted the job based on my resume, and then asking questions he could answer from my resume. I asked to use the bathroom and didn't go back because the environment was so toxic. I later saw him at my job at the time with his wife, and he was still rude to me. He's a horrible person.
- What makes you want this job?
Mathematics TA
The interview process for a Mathematics TA position is simple and effective. First, you send in your resume and cover letter, showing off your education and any teaching experience you have. If you make the cut, you'll have an initial phone or video chat to see why you want the job, how well you talk, and if you know your stuff. If that goes well, you'll meet with the hiring team for an in-person or online interview. This usually includes a teaching demo where you show how you can explain math clearly. They might also ask some technical questions to check your math skills. They'll give you feedback along the way, and in the end, they'll pick the person with the best potential to teach and who fits the department, to help students succeed.
- Tell me about your knowledge of Linear Algebra and Differentiation and Calculus.
Assistant
I applied, and after a few weeks, they got in touch for a quick chat. It mostly involved going over my application again, then they asked a bunch of open-ended questions about my past tutoring experience. They also threw in some hypothetical "what would you do if" scenarios for challenging situations, and asked about the courses I'm comfortable teaching. It seemed like they cared about my previous work and how well I could answer questions, pretty much equally.
- What would you do if a student came to your office hours for help with homework and became very upset because their mother had just died?
- What would you do if a student started touching you inappropriately during office hours?
Assistant Director
The interview process was quite lengthy, spanning several months. Fortunately, I was applying to multiple places simultaneously, so the extended duration wasn't a major issue. The initial part involved a group interview, which was a good use of time on campus. Following this, there were numerous follow-ups required to determine the next steps, as leadership seemed to struggle with making a timely decision. Ultimately, it took nearly three months from the interview to receive an offer.
- What unique value can I contribute to the team?
