Brand Strategist
So, I think there was a screening call first, then a video interview, after that I had to do a writing sample, and then I was invited for an in-person interview at their Philly office. Everyone was super nice, and the whole thing was pretty straightforward.
- Tell me about a marketing piece you really like.
- Can you walk me through your usual workflow?
- What's your approach to bringing on a new client?
Brand Storyteller
I applied online and Woden got back to me in a few days. They wanted me to write a blog post and edit a storykernel. The directions were vague, and they mentioned wanting someone to impress them and be innovative. I thought the editing part was particularly tough since even after studying their website and examples, it was hard to know exactly what they were looking for. The whole thing took hours, and I didn't get an invite for an in-person interview. It might be worth it for the right person, but expect to invest a good amount of time beforehand. I get wanting to be impressed, but a bit more direction would be helpful for potential hires, especially those coming from outside a marketing/branding background.
- Can you tell me about the most challenging aspect of your work?
Brand Storyteller
I applied online and was asked to do a work sample, which was a blog post. It was demanding because I didn't have much info about the company. The blog posts on their site varied a lot, so it was hard to know what they wanted. I won't do work samples before an in-person interview again because they take too much time, and getting a 'no thanks' is unacceptable. If you ask for 3-5 hours of work, at least give a specific reason for rejection. It's also not okay to ask for salary expectations without details on benefits, hours, tasks, or workload. It was hard to understand the company from their website, which is ironic for a branding company. It was a waste of time, and I should have listened to the negative reviews from former employees.
- What salary do you want?
Brand Storyteller
This was the rudest company I interviewed with. I did a 1000+ word blog and edited a company profile after reading their brand guidelines for 4 hours. I asked for brief feedback, but they never responded after I spent another 45 minutes redoing my work because they didn't specify how to track edits. The interview lady was responsive via email during this time, but then radio silent for a week after I followed up. This is a company that talks about brand storytelling, yet this is the story they tell about their brand. I don't recommend interviewing here if you value your time.
- Was the starting salary acceptable?
