Student Helpdesk
The interview was pretty relaxed and judgment-free. The interviewers were fellow students, which really helped set a comfortable tone. They asked relevant, practical questions, stayed focused, and kept the interview short and efficient, making the experience approachable, low-pressure, and easy to engage with from start to finish.

First, HR screens your resume to see if it matches the job qualifications. If it does, a hiring committee reviews your materials, and usually selects less than 5 people for interviews. Typically, there's a phone interview, and then three or fewer candidates are invited for an on-site interview. The hiring manager is often not part of the committee. The on-site interview usually involves a round-robin of questions from each committee member, asked in the same order to all candidates, making them fairly generic. You'll often need to write or type database queries to demonstrate your skills. The whole process can take months, and candidates often lose motivation and withdraw.
- The most challenging aspect is writing the queries.
ITS3
It's a pretty lengthy application and screening phase. Hiring is handled by a committee very formally. The committee consists of your future colleagues, potential clients, and your direct supervisor. After a candidate pool is identified, HR does an initial screen based on pre-set job qualifications. The hiring committee then reviews these candidates and selects a smaller group for phone interviews. These phone interviews often use a round-robin style where each committee member asks from a standard question list, identical for all candidates. Based on phone interview performance, about 3 candidates are chosen for an on-site interview. The on-site is a group/panel interview. You'll get a casual tour and meet most of the department staff. Each committee member will ask a question from a set list, the same for everyone. Questions focus on skills, not personality – no "if you were a tree" stuff. A skills test is also part of this. The work atmosphere is laid-back but professional. Co-workers and supervisors are highly educated and ask relevant questions. The committee makes the final hiring decision. Every applicant goes through the exact same process with the same questions and test. It's a very fair system.
- Given two tables of individuals, A and B, where B contains some, but not all, individuals from A, how would you merge the results to produce a list of individuals present in either table A or table B?
- Could you define what a datamart is and explain its purpose?
Assistant Professor
Applied and then a long wait to hear back, followed by a panel interview. Then gave a presentation to students and staff. Another long wait to hear back and then got the job offer. Waited again for the actual financial offer on paper.
- I think there were some scenario-based questions, which are always challenging.
