First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Williams-Sonoma, Inc..
Assistant Buyer
I had an in-person interview, but I declined to continue the process after receiving an offer elsewhere. This company seems to have significant issues with culture and diversity, as I felt unwelcome. I interviewed for three different positions. One director did not even sit down during my interview and instead cleaned her office, rolling her eyes when I answered a question. While some employees might be great, I didn't meet them. If this environment suits you, feel free to apply.
- What motivates your interest in working here?
- Can you describe your experience?
Assistant Buyer
Since I'm from out of state, the first step was a phone chat that took about 45 minutes. Following that, I had a two-hour Skype call. The HR person I spoke with was a recent grad, just like me, which made things way more chill and I could just chat instead of stressing about making a good impression. But, yeah, the nerves were definitely there for the Skype interview.
- Can you tell me about a significant challenge you faced at work and how you handled it?
Assistant Buyer
I had a really bad time interviewing with this company. I first had phone and Skype interviews with 7 people from departments I was interested in, and those went really well. Then I had a phone interview with the last person, who was incredibly rude and arrogant and seemed to be trying to scare people off. I told HR about how surprised I was by the negative experience, and they apologized and suggested I interview with another department. I interviewed in person with someone from that new department, and it went well. Then I interviewed again with the final interviewer, and they were again really rude and arrogant. After 10 total interviews, they told me I wasn't qualified and that they'd 'see if they had room for me' and basically kicked me out. The corporate office also seemed really depressing, with everyone looking miserable. I mentioned to HR that maybe I'd be a better fit for Pottery Barn, and they passed my resume along. I didn't hear anything for a month, so I emailed HR to express my initial excitement and then extreme disappointment with the unprofessional interview process. They responded by saying they'd take me out of their system. I've heard from others that this place is terrible, and upper management is unapproachable and dismissive of ideas. My advice is to avoid it, especially if you're new to buying or merchandising, as this place will crush your confidence.
