So I had five interviews with Wikimedia Enterprise, and honestly, it was one of the worst experiences I've had. Communication was terrible. I always had to chase them for updates after pretty much every single step. The recruiter I was talking to changed four times, which was confusing and made it hard to get consistent info. It's weird to see so many recruiters involved but no one seems to be coordinating. The invite emails were super vague, just saying I'd have a one-hour call with two people, no idea what to expect or prepare for. After the last interview, total silence. I reached out, got nothing. Then I contacted a different recruiter who promised a decision by a certain date. That date came and went, it's been over two weeks since the final interview, and still no word. Had to follow up again just to get feedback. It felt really one-sided, like they were just exploring other options and didn't care about my time. The lack of communication shows no respect. It all just felt very disorganized internally.

After the last interview, I was told I was the finalist and would get an offer in two days. Two days later, I asked for an update and was told that due to unexpected budget planning, they were putting a hold on hiring and I wouldn't get an offer. The steps were: Screening call, interview with hiring manager, take-home test, team discussion, product team discussion, interview with the director, and reference check. The overall process was good, maybe one of the best interviews I've had. I just wish they hadn't wasted so much time on interviews if the budget wasn't approved.

I had a chat with a really enthusiastic senior recruiter at Wikimedia. She was super passionate about her job, the company's vibe, and what they stand for. She asked about my background with PHP, Node.js, and parsing HTML. Turns out, she thought I didn't have enough industry experience with big-scale web applications because I'm a recent grad. It was a bit of a bummer, but she was incredibly encouraging and gave me some great tips on job hunting and connecting with the right people. I'd totally recommend Wikimedia though, based on her enthusiasm and the way she presented things. I'd definitely apply again! It truly sounds like a place where people value their mission, work on non-profit projects for global education, and aim to provide free knowledge access for a better world!

Wikimedia Foundation Software Engineer Interview Questions

Quoted word for word from Wikimedia Foundation interview reports.

Create a program that processes data coming from an emitter. The data is received in order, and each record takes between 0.1 to 5 seconds to process. The output needs to be a real-time, ordered stream of the processed data. For demonstration, the processing time is simulated by random sleep intervals between 0.1 and 5 seconds.
