First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Westpac.
Software Engineer
So, I interviewed for a Senior Integration Developer role, it was hybrid in Gold Coast. The process had three parts. First, a remote technical interview that lasted an hour with three people from Westpac. It was a deep dive into Spring Boot, microservices, design principles and some situational questions. It was pretty intense but organized and I felt good about it. Then, I had a face-to-face interview in Gold Coast. This one was more about personality and fitting in with the team, it was chill and a good chance to see the place and the team. Lastly, there was a 3-hour Codility test with two problems. Honestly, I didn't think Codility was the best way to test skills, it felt a bit old school since it just looks at the score and not how you work through it. I got around 30%, and I figured I should have used AI to code faster and then focused on checking the output. I thought Codility would flag AI use, but apparently, it doesn't. Overall, it was a good experience, especially the parts with people. The Codility test though, not so much a real-world skill or team-work reflection.
- Tell me about your experience with Spring Boot.
- Can you explain your understanding of microservices architecture?
- What are your thoughts on various design principles?
Data Scientist
The process started with an online assessment (OA), followed by a video interview (VI), and then an assessment centre (AC). It took about 2-3 weeks to hear back after the first two stages, and less than a week for the AC outcome. The OA involved questions on maths, spelling mistakes and patterns, and emotional intelligence. The VI had 7 questions, with 1 minute to prepare and around 2 minutes to answer most. The AC included both an individual and a group activity. The HR team caused some confusion by sending incorrect meeting links and assessment schedules.
- Can you describe a situation where you exceeded expectations to help a customer?
- Could you introduce yourself?
- Given that you've likely applied to other graduate programs, what makes Westpac stand out to you?
Technology Graduate
So, first there was a resume screen, then some online assessments which were like psychometric tests, covering basic math and spotting grammar mistakes in an article. After that, there was a video interview, mostly behavioral, asking things like when you went the extra mile for a customer. The next part was a live assessment centre. It involved working with three other grads to figure out a solution to a problem. For instance, we were given 10 candidate profiles with details on how much they value money, their age, experience, and specialty, and we had to decide which ones would be the best fit for a particular job.
- Can you share an instance where you exceeded expectations to help a customer?
- Given a set of candidate profiles with varying attributes like financial priorities, age, experience, and specialization, how would you determine the most suitable candidates for a specific role?
Consumer Connect Banker
I first did an online behavior test, then I had a virtual interview where I had to give pre-recorded answers. After that, I interviewed with the hiring manager and my direct supervisor for about 45 minutes. They asked me about times I'd done well, handled complaints, and received feedback. I got feedback after the interview, which was very encouraging.
- Tell me about a time a customer complained and how you resolved it.
- Describe an instance where you excelled in your role.
- How did you manage a customer complaint situation?
