Instructional Designer
First, I had a phone interview with a recruiter. It was great, felt like a chat, and I really connected with the recruiter. They were upfront about the salary range ($85-99k), which I appreciated. I was told I'd move to the next step, and they asked for my portfolio link. Next, I had a 1:1 interview via MS Teams with the Director. This was totally different - stiff and a bit awkward. The interviewer was fine, but I got the vibe he wasn't looking for someone like me. His camera kept shaking, which was distracting. When I mentioned my portfolio, I don't think he even looked at it, and he didn't ask about my design experience or past projects.

- Tell me about yourself.
- What do you think is the future of instructional design?
Instructional Designer
I was contacted by an internal recruiter from WGU on LinkedIn, as I had not applied for any position. The recruiter was complimentary and stated I was a good fit, inviting me to a phone call to discuss opportunities. I scheduled a call, during which the recruiter spent 40 minutes with me, conducting what felt like a formal interview, though I was unprepared. I was told I'd receive a follow-up email with instructions to send my resume, but it never arrived. I then emailed the recruiter myself, but received no response. A couple of weeks later, I received a LinkedIn message stating they had chosen other candidates. Looking back, I suspect the recruiter's main goal was to gather information about my current employer, as she asked several detailed questions about it. I'm left wondering about the genuine intent behind this recruiter's actions.
- Can you tell me about the company where you currently work?
Instructional Designer
The interview process for the Instructional Designer role began with a total of five phone interviews. The initial HR screening interview was followed by three calls with managers from the Product Development team. An additional call was conducted with a lead instructional designer. There was a two-week break before the in-person interviews, which took place at the SLC office. During the F2F interviews, I met with the same three managers again, along with three new managers, VPs, or directors from the department. Decisions about the position have not yet been made.
