I had a phone interview with HR and then a video chat with the hiring manager. She mentioned they weren't rushed to hire and that they really cared about cultural fit, which felt like age discrimination since I'm over 50.

I sent my resume and got an email to set up an interview for a role that might not have even been real. I had an interview with 5 people: 2 VPs, 2 PEs, and an HR person. They asked basic questions about my skills, software knowledge, and experience. It seemed to go well, and we even talked about company perks like hunting trips, snacks, training, gym memberships, and relaxed work areas. They were really keen on my water simulation and flow modeling experience. After the interview, they gave me a facility tour, which felt like a good sign, and then I spoke with HR for about 40 minutes about salary and benefits. Before I left, one of the VPs asked about my expected salary. I said 55k, which is lower than what Glassdoor shows for this company. Maybe that was too high, or I wasn't qualified even with my experience, internships, and EIT cert, despite not having a Master's. I sent a thank you note the same day. Weeks later, I got a letter saying they didn't have enough work for another project engineer and I wasn't a top candidate anyway. It's a bummer they offered a tour and a benefits chat if I wasn't even a top contender.

It was a pretty standard group interview with engineers from various levels. I went through a similar interview process multiple times with different people, all of whom were clearly engineering staff. They didn't offer an office tour or a chance to meet other employees. I did get to ask questions about the firm, and we discussed salary during the interview. It felt a bit long, and they seemed really interested in getting to know me and my motivations.

It took a few months to get hired. There were three interviews in total, and each one was about a month apart. I met with different staff members each time. The recruiter was great and kept me updated on everything.
