First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at West Bend Insurance Company.
Software Development Engineer in Test
Had a 30min phone screen call (video, camera optional), then a 1hr technical interview with the Hiring Manager (30min) and two team members (not QA) (30min). No coding, just asked about tech used and QA experience, and how I'd manually test a feature. Lastly, a 45min behavioral interview.

- Can you describe your experience in QA?
Business Analyst
It started with a recruiter screen, which felt like a standard check-the-box exercise by someone not really into tech. Then, there was a sort of random interview with the hiring managers who would also be my direct supervisors. After that, the recruiter sent over an undisclosed Prevue assessment. It's a bit of a red flag when a company uses a tool like that without any prior discussion, especially when the assessment itself isn't clearly scientifically validated for job success, though it might show who's good at following the company line.
- Regarding technology-forward or technology-first initiatives, how would you manage developers to keep them from going too deep down a technical rabbit hole?
- Do you see IT as being part of the business?
Underwriter
I had 5 interviews total. First, a recruiter call, which was pretty standard. Then, I had a video interview with 2 regional supervisors at the same time, and right after that, another video interview with my direct supervisor on the same day. Following that, I had a video interview with the underwriting department manager. All of these interviews were mostly about my resume and experience, not really behavioral questions. After finishing all 4 interviews, they requested performance reviews from my current company, which I found intrusive and unnecessary. They did accept references instead. I accepted the offer for $72k, but honestly, the company turned out to be a nightmare.

Product Owner
The interview process was pretty simple. It involved a 30-minute phone call, followed by an in-person meeting and then an exam. The exam was kind of embarrassing for them because it was an aptitude test covering language, math, and recognition skills. It didn't seem relevant to the job at all, and it was hard to take seriously since it was given so early, before knowing if the role was a good fit. The pay wasn't very competitive either. The limited vacation and variable pay were unexpected. They base the offer on your minimum salary expectation, but honestly, considering the benefits, I'd add an extra $30k-$40k to your initial thought. In the end, I think there was about a $70k gap between their offer and market rate for the total compensation.
