Wesleyan University Interview Questions
& Process

I'm a Computer Science Major and Data Analysis Minor at Wesleyan University. I reached out to a professor to express my interest. Then I worked on class projects and got a final grade at the end of the semester. The process was pretty fine since we just covered algorithms and basic concepts.

We met in person for a hands-on assessment of manual dexterity. This involved tasks like building a hexagonal shape, checking the grain of paper, and cutting a sheet of paper in half. I was also asked about my prior book arts background and any other labor skills I might possess, such as woodwork. Following this, I was offered the position. Note that this wasn't an official Wesleyan University interview, but rather a one-on-one with the head conservator, so my perspective may be unique.

The application had been open for over a year with some errors, but I applied anyway. About seven months later, I received a call for a surprise interview and they wanted me to come in within an hour, so I had no time to prepare. The first interview was with the team leader of the department. The next round was with the department head and the dean. Even though they offered me the position, one interviewer was wearing jeans and a ripped shirt, and the dean was smoking throughout the interview. I decided this wasn't the right place for me.

This was a horrible experience. The whole process took about 3 months from when I applied until I got rejected, and I had more than 5 interviews for a role that wasn't even senior. The recruiter was condescending, and most of the interviewers seemed inexperienced or uninterested. There were awkward silences, a lack of enthusiasm, and hints about no work-life balance, which were all red flags. Some interviewers were late because they forgot or didn't know how to use the tech. Overall, it was a negative experience. I don't have anything bad to say about the university itself, but applying for a job there was a nightmare and I wouldn't do it again.
