Senior Editor
the routine was to go to their office, check in at the desk, then wait around to meet someone. You'd then answer some questions and also be asked if you had any questions for them. The goal was to look interested and prepared, stay jolly, focus, and try to seem still interested and alert. Then shake hands all around and leave via the elevator, the street, and the subway.
- What are your motivations for wanting to work here?
Sales Assistant
The interview process was pretty easy. I met with the Midwest Director and an Account Manager. It was one in-person interview, and then I had to come back a week later for a skills test, which included a typing test and some media math questions. They gave me an offer pretty fast.
- Were the questions all very basic?
Executive Assistant
I had a phone interview first, then they invited me for an in-person meeting. I spoke with the HR contact who explained the role involves supporting the EIC and associate publisher. I was aware of recent executive changes and cost-cutting measures affecting salaries due to my research. The HR Manager didn't offer specifics on the day-to-day tasks, mentioning only that the previous assistant wanted to move into the industry and the current intern wasn't working out. She then administered a very unusual skills test, unlike anything I've encountered in my 15-year career. She mentioned she'd be grading tests from over 20 applicants and that passing would lead to a meeting with the two direct reports. I didn't feel a strong connection to the company, so I opted not to send a thank you note as I wasn't very interested.
- No questions were asked during the interview, as the interviewer appeared disengaged and spoke robotically.
Advertising Sales
It was pretty straightforward. I first spoke with the Ad Sales Assistant who reviewed my resume and then introduced me to the team. We discussed the importance of understanding travel requirements and the specific mission of the publication you're applying to.
- Can you start by telling me about yourself?
