We had a video call set up, and everyone joined on time with working mics. The initial screening interview was a mix of styles, followed by another chat with my potential teammates. They asked me about my past work, what I'm currently doing, and my future plans. It felt pretty fair and they were as open as they could be.

I had a 1:1 interview with the CEO and then was invited to meet with the COO. I also had the chance to chat with some of the staff. I really enjoyed the interviews, the people were great, the questions were great, and the conversations were great, and it was all very professional. I didn't get the role in the end, but the interview process was a positive experience.

Behavioral Technical System Design Case

First I had a call with the engineering manager, we just talked about my experience and what they were looking for. Then there was a technical discussion with the team's engineers about the technologies they use, bugs I've encountered, systems I've designed, and my open source contributions. The last part of that same call was a cultural fit interview where they asked about how I handle team interactions and my preferred processes. I got to ask my questions at the end. The whole thing took about 2 weeks, mostly because I was busy with personal stuff, but I think they could have gone faster.

Behavioral

The interview process felt pretty informal. I was really surprised they didn't hire me and didn't even give me any feedback, especially since I thought I was super qualified. The recruiter also thought it was nuts that I wasn't hired without a clear reason. I guess it was just one of those situations where someone didn't click with me and tanked my application. No worries though, I'm not really seeing a future in this kind of company anymore and am only focusing on the big companies now. I feel like I wasted years on startups that don't go anywhere because they can't really compete long-term.
