First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Washington Department of Corrections.
Human Resource Consultant
It was a pretty standard interview process for a Washington State department, basically a panel interview. They asked questions about my experience and job knowledge. Everyone was nice and patient, and the questions felt relevant. I just personally struggle with interviews.
- Can you share an instance where you made a mistake at work that upset someone? Describe how you managed the situation and the final result.
- What does an inclusive and diverse work environment mean to you?
Health Record Technician
I applied online and got an email the next day saying I was selected for an interview over Microsoft Teams with three department leads. A few days later, I had my Teams interview. At the end of it, they said they were still interviewing and I'd hear soon. Two days later, I was invited for a second interview and a tour of the facilities. A few days after that invite, I toured the place I'd work if hired. It was a really thorough tour and I liked it. At the end of the tour, they said the same thing again - they were still interviewing and I'd hear soon. About two weeks after this, I got an email saying there were many qualified applicants and even though my credentials were great, I wasn't chosen.
- How would you approach a task involving a 14-inch stack of papers that needs to be finished by day's end?
Office Assistant
It's a 3 person panel interview. They read all questions directly from a script and won't ask follow-up questions or deviate. This is standard for WA State employees to ensure fairness and avoid bias, making it feel impersonal. You'll always get 1-3 questions about diversity and inclusion.
- Considering our Department values diversity and inclusiveness, how would you go about promoting diversity within the workplace?
- In a chaotic office environment, what are your strategies for prioritizing tasks?
- Describe your approach to handling a disagreement with a colleague or supervisor.
Corrections Officer
I applied online and was invited to an interview at the correctional facility along with other candidates. Initially, two staff members interviewed me, asking a series of straightforward questions. Having a 4-year degree is a significant advantage. Following the first interview, I met with an HR representative to review my paperwork and references, ensuring everything was in order. A few days later, the next phase involved professional reference checks. Upon successfully completing these, I proceeded to the Psych Battery Exam, a set of psychological tests designed to confirm the mental fortitude required for a Correctional Officer role. Passing this exam leads to a conditional offer, which necessitates a pre-employment drug test and a psychological assessment conducted by a psychologist after a face-to-face interview to evaluate job suitability. Successful completion of this stage results in a start date for the Academy. This entire process can span 4-6 months, as my application in January led to starting the Academy in May.
- Tell me about a time you handled an upset customer and how you de-escalated the situation.
