First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Washington County, Oregon.
Program Educator
Selected candidates had to pass a DMV record check and a Spanish written test before the interview. The interview itself was a panel interview, with supervisors and personnel from the same division. Even though the job posting suggested they were looking for someone with transferable skills, the interview mainly consisted of behavioral questions directly related to the job posting. Many questions asked for in-depth details, such as how to communicate with people and businesses about the program, which depends on identifying the target audience and their communication needs. The description notes that Washington County should either make job postings more specific or conduct less technical interviews. It's suggested that the HR department and the specific division need better coordination.

Community Corrections Specialist
Got the first contact through a government jobs site, easy peasy. They set up an online interview which was fast, covered a lot, didn't ask the same thing twice, and was pretty friendly. They gave me a heads-up on when I'd hear about the next steps. Then I got an email to fill out some detailed history questions and sign some releases. They kept me in the loop with clear communication as I moved forward, including testing.
- What can you contribute to the Corrections department based on your experience?
Deputy
The hiring process was long and involved lots of paperwork, several pre-interviews including one for background checks, and a physical test. The main interview was a panel interview, which made me realize I didn't want to work there. They tried to trip you up in a hostile way.
- What actions would you take if you observed a fellow deputy smelling of marijuana, given that it was still illegal at the time?
- What is your basis for identifying the smell of marijuana?
- Would you report a colleague knowing it could lead to their termination or imprisonment?
Mental Health Specialist
So I had two panel interviews, the first one was virtual and the second one was in person. Different people were on the panels for each. They sent the questions the day before for both. The in person one also had a part where I had to give a 10 minute presentation on a topic related to the job.
- Can you explain why you believe you are well-suited for this role?
- Describe a situation where you faced a difficulty while participating in a training program.
- What insights or lessons did you gain from that challenging training experience?
