First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at W. R. Berkley.
Software Engineer Intern
The interview process included a phone screen and a final interview with the team lead and supervisor. The phone screen focused on my projects and previous experience. The final interview covered standard topics like my goals, why I want this role, and why I'm interested in this company.
- Can you tell me about a project you worked on recently?
- What are your career goals?
- What motivates your interest in this position?
Legal
The HR was a mess. I had a great interview with the hiring manager who said I was perfect for the role and that we would set up a group interview. It was scheduled for Monday, but I got a cancellation notice over the weekend. They said they had hired someone else. Then, five days later, a friend applied and got the job. The hiring manager should have at least called to explain what happened.
- Regarding remote work and invoicing, can I work remotely and not invoice since there are no offices near me?
Underwriter
So the recruiter was a terrible communicator, always late and not prepared. It took her 3 days to get back to me about my availability to schedule the interview. Then she was almost 10 minutes late to call me for the phone interview. We started the call by talking about work locations, asking me where I live even though that info is on my resume and in the application I submitted. The recruiter then didn't know if they had an office in my state or if this job could be remote, even after I told her I can't relocate due to family reasons. The next question she asked was if working 4 days in the office would be a problem. Seriously, at least be prepared for an interview if you're going to be late.
- Would you have an issue with working 4 days a week in the office?
Senior Premium Auditor
The interview process started with a recruiter call. This was followed by a second interview with a five-person panel. Interestingly, three of the panelists lacked premium audit experience, which was evident in their questioning. It's important to note that you wouldn't actually be working for Berkley directly, but rather for Berkley Audit Services, a separate entity. Furthermore, their salary offerings for a senior premium auditor role are significantly below market value, to the tune of $20,000-$25,000. While they offer good benefits, they likely won't compensate for such a substantial salary gap. No technical questions were posed during the interviews.
- What prompted your departure from your previous role?
