Got a call the day after I applied from the in-house recruiter for what was pretty much a surprise first interview. Two days later I was at the office meeting with the general counsel. They called me because I was interesting, not based solely on my experience and background. I loved that.

So, there were 3 rounds plus a take-home assignment. First, a recruiter called to chat about my current gig, my studies, and tools I've used. Then, I got a take-home coding challenge to solve the vehicle routing problem as quickly and accurately as possible in a language I picked. Round 2 was an in-person technical interview, about an hour long. We talked about my take-home solution, how I built it, the research behind it, and how I'd make it better with more time. We also covered my current job, my technical skills, and some side projects.

I interviewed with Vorto three times at their downtown Denver office. One of those interviews was with someone who would have reported to me, and it felt awkward because they seemed to lack interviewing experience and didn't contribute much to the process. After I put in a lot of time and effort, they told me the role was on hold. It seemed like they weren't very organized, transparent, or respectful of my time. The whole process felt unprofessional and disorganized. While they might have interesting jobs, my interview experience was really bad.

The first call was a regular screen. They were upfront about the demanding nature of the job, which was good. My interview with the engineering manager went well from my perspective. I asked about hearing back, and they said 1-2 weeks, either way. No issue there. More than two weeks passed, so I emailed the manager again for any updates because I was keen to do the take-home. It's been over five weeks since that interview, and I still haven't heard back. Looking back, it seems like I dodged a bullet; they didn't seem to care much about communication or basic courtesy. When the manager mentioned being employee number x and their goal to be as big as Google, I immediately got red flags, and there were more. Workplace culture and balance are really important to me. If they are for you too, I'd suggest not bothering.
