First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Volt Information Sciences.
Recruiter
I had a panel interview with some team members where we did a practical exercise. They gave me a job description and asked me to think about the qualifying questions I would ask to get info for the next step, specifically for building a boolean search.
- For a given job description, what questions would you ask to gather information for creating a boolean search?
- What skills would you put in your boolean search?

I had my first phone interview on September 28th, and then was invited for an in-person interview on October 3rd. I felt the interview went really well with both the branch manager and the regional manager. The next part of the process was truly unprofessional, disrespectful, and inconsiderate. I was told I'd hear back about a second interview by the end of that week, October 7th, but nothing. The following Tuesday, October 11th, I emailed the manager about an update, and he said he was still interviewing people and would let me know by the end of that week. Again, nothing. I happened to run into the Regional Manager at a concert the next Monday, October 17th. He asked if I'd been called back for a second interview, and I said no. He mentioned he'd speak to the Branch Manager and get back to me the next day. That also didn't happen. I called on Friday, October 21st, but didn't get a callback. I called again on Monday, October 24th, and finally got an email back from the manager. He claimed he tried to call but couldn't reach me, even though he just needed to dial the area code. He asked me to call him back, which I did. After a few minutes on the phone, it was clear I didn't get the job, especially since it had been 3 weeks since the interview, which is a bad sign. What upset me was the lack of consideration for my time. The manager then explained why I didn't get the job, saying both positions were already filled. He also said he really liked me and that if he had one more position, he would hire me, which I found insulting. If I was that close to getting the job, I would expect a second interview, which I never received. I don't think this is a Volt issue, but rather a problem with the Manager in Boise. This has been the most negative hiring experience I've had to date. Having worked in staffing before, I've never seen such disregard for people's time.
- What actions would you take if you were struggling to fill a role after exhausting all standard recruitment methods?
Technical Recruiter
The hiring process was long and drawn out. Ultimately, I was not interviewed for a job I have nearly 30 years of experience in because the remote hiring manager didn't think I was 'technically' strong enough based on my resume. However, the local staff recognized my value and wanted to hire me. A peer of the remote manager did interview me by phone, but it didn't help. The process started in November 2010 and the position is still open. It's a good company with good local people, but the remote manager has a very negative mindset and is only with the firm short-term. Volt is a good company to work for as a contractor or local employee, if you can get hired.
