Store Manager
Had a great first interview, and the second interview felt super positive. HR called the day after to let me know they were freezing recruitment for this role, even though I was told they needed several people. I followed up twice and got the same answer: 'we would like to offer you are role but we are not in a position to fill this role, we'll get back to you asap.' They never did get back to me.
- Can you tell me about your experience managing teams of various sizes?
Store Manager
After applying online, I was invited to a selection event at the Head Office. It was quite intense and went like this: 1) A group exercise where we had to decide the best location for a new hardware store. This was followed by a tough group role-play where we were criticized by a fictional company director, which I actually found enjoyable. 2) A 1-2-1 interview. This was challenging. I was told the role was for "top 20 - heart attack managers". I wasn't sure how to respond to that, so I didn't really say anything, though I guess I should have talked about my resilience and stress management strategies. I thought it was a bit odd, and it probably showed in my ability to manage my emotions. 3) An individual exercise where I had to prioritize 15 tasks within a limited time, which was harder than expected, and explaining my choices felt pressured. My overall impression of the company was that it was a bit unpleasant. At the end of the final exercise, we were simply dismissed with a 'right, that's it', with no debrief or thanks, despite some of us traveling for hours. I tried to go to the restroom before my long journey home, and was followed by other candidates, one of whom seemed distressed. When we regrouped in reception to hand over our IDs, the HR person seemed annoyed and said they'd take them at the next stage. I got a generic rejection email two weeks later, and my request for feedback was ignored. A difficult process doesn't need to be rude.

The interview process was easy and structured. Make sure you have your strengths to show, where you do well and be honest where you need improvement. These guys have the tools to help you and drive you to succeed. A background of optometry is not needed but a strong outlook of KPI extquoteright s will get you far. No competency based questions, they treat you the same no matter what level you are.
- Can you tell me about yourself and what motivates you?
