First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Virginia Department of Environmental Quality.
GIS Specialist
I had a panel interview where they went through a list of questions based on the job posting, including a SQL question. You really need to have experience with most of the things they listed. It was about an hour long.
- Can you explain how to do basic queries in SQL?
Data Analyst
The interview process was about an hour long, with three nice panel members. They gave us the questions on paper, which was easy to read. They asked me to write some SQL code, not too hard, like easy to medium level. This was to see if I could do the technical stuff in a relaxed way. I had to actually use SQL to show I knew how to solve problems.
- Can you explain what ETL is?
- Tell me about your previous experience and the tools you know.
Permit Writer
So I'm goin through the state agency interview process right now. These state interviews are usually kinda cold, they're more about your technical skills and what you know about processes rather than, like, who you are. There's a panel discussion for the speaking part, and the writing part is done on your own.

Environmental Specialist
I had a panel interview with 3 people: the hiring manager and two of my potential peers. They each asked some questions and took notes. I was informed that the questions are pre-determined for each interview. It can feel a little intimidating facing three interviewers. Depending on the specific role, there might also be a math test. While my experience was in-person, I know they also conduct phone interviews.
