First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Virginia College.
Campus Administrator
Got an email for a phone interview with the previous person in the role. We talked about me and my experience, and she explained the job duties. Then I had a face-to-face with the campus President, which started with me talking about myself and my background. The position was explained again, and I was asked if I was up for it. Instead of 'what would you do' questions, I mostly just talked about how my experience fit the role as it was being described. After that, I met with the Dean of the college to go over my experience once more. Everyone was really nice and positive, which made me feel good about potentially working there.
- Could you please tell me about yourself and your experience?
Networking Instructor
I applied online and got a call the next day to do a "practice teach" later that week. I did my presentation on my certifications in front of the lead instructor, program director, and another person from a different department. Next, I did an insight phone interview where they asked situational questions and gauged my willingness to help students that are falling behind and generally working with difficult students while still teaching other students who are on track. The next time I came in, I was expecting to watch the instructor teach to get a feel for the environment and expectations however, the syllabus had my name on it and that class was my class. The lead instructor did teach my first two classes and help me get the resources I needed to get started. I think it went so fast because I am a previous employee from a different department.
- How would you handle teaching students with varying skillsets, such as students who work in the field versus those who don't know how to turn on a computer?
Accounts Receivable Specialist
I applied online, and it took about a month for them to get back to me. The department manager reached out, not HR. I spoke with the manager, who asked about my background and explained the job and hours (which were still TBD). She then asked if I could handle the collections aspect of the role. After that, I had to fill out more paperwork for a background check. A week later, I interviewed with the college President. He asked about my personality and background to get a feel for me and then asked if I had any questions. Four days after that, I got the job offer. The President has to approve all hires, but the manager sets the salary and hours.
- If you got the job today, how would you go about doing the tasks involved?
- What makes you want to take this job?
Admissions Associate
We started with a group interview to sort through all the applicants. It was held in a hotel conference room with people who weren't directly from the campus or the department. They asked general questions and some about how we'd deal with different situations. A few days later, I got a call for a phone interview with an outside company, which was mostly personality questions and some open-ended scenario questions. Then, I had a one-on-one interview with the department director and one of the interviewers from the group session. The director was really nice. It was a good chance to show why I was the best fit. The whole process was well-organized and quick, with only a couple of days between interviews.
- What is your definition of change?
- Can you explain what "dependable" means to you?
- How would you approach different situations?
