Behavioral Technical Coding

The whole process took about a month. I started with a recruiter chat, who was really nice and talked up the company culture. He mentioned a 3-part interview process: a technical interview and then a coding challenge, but didn't say they'd be combined. Then, I had a 45-min Zoom with the hiring manager, which I assumed was just the interview part. He seemed uninterested from the start and rushed everything. He only asked about my current work and cut me off before I could ask many questions to start the technical part, which was a vanilla JavaScript DOM manipulation task. It wasn't super hard, but it was only about 15 minutes. Since I primarily use React and not vanilla JS, I had to Google a lot of methods and queries. To make it worse, he changed things in the online editor while I was looking at Google, which was super confusing. There just wasn't enough time for someone not focused on vanilla JS, so I only got part of it done. He cut me off, ending the interview within 30 seconds. This rushed experience felt nothing like the culture the recruiter described. I didn't hear back for 3 weeks, then got a generic rejection email. Honestly, even if I'd gotten an offer, I would've declined because the interview gave me really bad vibes.

HR called me for an introduction. I'm used to HR screenings but this recruiter was skeptical and it felt like an interrogation. She had a stern tone. I was referred by someone, so she asked who referred me, their name, how we met, and how we know each other. She wanted to verify if I actually know the person and if my story checked out. She interrupted me with counter questions, making it feel like an interrogation. It lasted 30 minutes. She doubted my master's degree, asking if I was sure I had one. She said she'd email me with next steps, but I never got an email, and I don't care.

The interview started with a phone screen and a fun, open-ended coding assignment. Next, there was a relaxed office visit with a cultural intro, office tour, and casual chats. The final stage was more structured, involving further skill assessments, situational questions, and meetings with a variety of team members from different fields. Everyone I met was genuinely nice and seemed happy at Vimeo. They were engaged, and I didn't feel interrogated. However, they asked thoughtful questions and ensured I gave clear, understandable answers before moving on. It was clear they are invested in maintaining a positive environment. The emphasis on team happiness and a supportive culture was apparent throughout the process. The engaging work and active community involvement are also big pluses, and these factors led me to accept the offer.
