First, there was a chat with the hiring manager. Then, I had a panel interview that lasted about an hour, followed by another 2-hour panel interview with breaks. It was a 3 on 1 situation and didn't feel very interactive.

The panel asked questions that were pretty straightforward and not too difficult. The people on the panel were nice and kept me feeling comfortable the whole time. All in all, it was a decent interview process for someone just starting out in their career.

Had an initial call with the engineering manager, who I think is the hiring manager, and then a panel interview with 3 people. The hiring manager was nice, but it felt like a standard government recruitment process. They have set behavioural questions, and each person on the panel asks one. There wasn't much chance for a real conversation about a candidate's skills, and I'd be surprised if they actually read my CV, since my time was wasted for 90 minutes answering questions that, if they had read it, they wouldn't have even considered moving me forward, nor would I have considered moving forward myself. Their questions were very similar and formulaic, which is why government jobs won't attract top talent. The interview felt more like an interrogation than a two-way discussion. Dodged a bullet.

The whole process was pretty smooth, they gave us plenty of notice and it was really straightforward. Lots of info was available online too. The interview itself was with 3 people sitting behind a table. They asked standard questions about values, then some scenario-based questions about communication, hospitality, and dealing with hostile people.

Confirmed questions4 questions
  • Can you share an experience where you handled violence or aggression?
  • Tell me about a time you had to communicate effectively.
  • Describe a situation where you showed hospitality.
