Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Viasat.
Software Test Engineer Intern
I did a virtual interview for a Software Test Intern role at Viasat. It was mostly about networking concepts, with two interviewers asking questions related to networks and testing. They specifically asked about the OSI model.
- Can you explain how the OSI model works?
Test Engineer
The interview process was pretty long. After I applied, HR called me back about a month later for a phone chat. A week after that, an engineer called me for a technical phone interview. Then, I went in for an onsite interview which had 3 panel interviews, each an hour long with 2 interviewers. Most of the time was spent at the whiteboard working on problems that covered my 4 years of engineering experience in 3 hours. After the interviews, they took us to lunch and then gave a tour of the facility. I didn't get an offer, and it was disappointing that they never even called or emailed to say they chose another candidate. It felt really unprofessional given the whole process took over 2 months.
- Can you walk us through your 4 years of engineering experience in the next 3 hours?
- Demonstrate your problem-solving skills related to your 4 years of engineering experience.
Systems Test Engineer
After applying online, I got contacted by a recruiter a couple weeks later to schedule a phone interview. That interview was about 2 hours long where the interviewer asked me about the projects on my resume, how involved I was in them, and what skills I used. A few weeks after that, I had another 30 minute interview where they placed me on a specific team. Then I got an offer and accepted it.
- Tell me about a physics homework question you found particularly interesting.
