I had this quick screening call with a recruiter at Veic. She was really upfront and asked right away if I needed sponsorship, and when I said yes, she mentioned that the company doesn’t sponsor visas. She explained it clearly and said they wouldn’t move forward so as not to waste time, which I really appreciated. It was a short call, just about 5 minutes, but I respect how direct she was. It saved me a lot of time and energy.

I had a phone interview and it went pretty well. They invited me to email them if I had any questions, but then they ghosted me. I sent them a few emails asking for an update, and they never responded. Not even a simple 'you're not moving forward.' Super unprofessional, and honestly, it's companies like this that mess up the job market. If they can't even do that, I don't want to work there anyway, so it's probably for the best.

I only had a phone interview, so I can't speak to the entire process. They didn't seem to like it when I asked about salary range and gave a vague answer about "we are a nonprofit with professional salaries." I found this disrespectful and unprofessional. It's 2023, if you care about DEI and transparency you should be listing salary ranges on a job posting and not give your applicants the runaround when they ask about it. In my experience there is always a known budget for a position so you are intentionally putting your applicants at a disadvantage for negotiations.

I sent my resume and cover letter in late July. I had a phone screen with HR in mid-August where they asked what I knew about the company, why I wanted to work there, what experience qualified me, and my experience communicating to non-specialists. Then in late August, I had a panel interview with the department manager, a data scientist, and an informatics architect. I got an email in late September saying they weren't moving forward with my application.
