First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Vera Institute Of Justice.
Program Associate
The process started with HR screening, then an interview with the Initiative Director. After that, there was an assignment, followed by an in-person presentation and interview with five staff members from different parts of the organization. The coordination of these steps was really disorganized, and the poor communication from HR almost made me withdraw. HR made mistakes at every stage, requiring me to clarify things, and once an interview was canceled just 30 minutes beforehand. It was shocking for such a respected organization and made me worry about bigger issues. I'm glad I stayed, as it seems these problems were limited to HR. Still, it was a confusing and stressful experience.

I spoke with a Vera recruiter by phone in November for a screening interview. I was told I'd get an update on a second round interview after Thanksgiving. After I followed up, I was told the update would come after the New Year. It's now late January and after two more follow-ups, I still haven't heard anything. I don't even have a direct email for the recruiter, just one that goes through their hiring software. While I'm okay with not moving forward, the ghosting is really unprofessional and makes the organization look bad. I've seen other jobs at Vera I'd be good for, but I'm not interested anymore because of this hiring approach.
- What's your motivation for seeking employment at Vera?
Program Associate
It was a two-part interview process. The first interview was a 30-minute Skype call with the Director of the Center and the Associate Director. My interview process took a bit of a turn after the first interview because I had another offer on the table, which definitely compressed the timeline. It's also worth noting I was interviewing for this role having already worked with the Director on a project where my current employer partnered with Vera. The second interview was originally planned for about two weeks later, but because of the competing offer, I ended up having my second interview and received an offer all within 72 hours of my first interview.
