It was supposed to be a 45 minutes interview with the hiring manager, mixing technical and behavioral questions, but it finished in 25 minutes. The job description said Linux was a plus, but they kept asking about it. My resume and past experience didn't mention Linux. I'm not sure why I was selected for this interview.

So, if you're thinking about interviewing for a Data Scientist role in San Jose, maybe reconsider. My interview experience was pretty bad, mostly because the hiring manager was super disrespectful. The recruiter started off great though - really nice, explained everything clearly about the job, the team, how the interviews would go, and even the benefits. The online assessment was fine, just four algorithm questions to do in 45 minutes. But after that, it got worse. Trying to schedule with the hiring manager was a pain; they rescheduled a bunch and even picked a time I said I wasn't available. That was annoying, but the main issue was the hiring manager's attitude during the actual interview. They cut the time from 45 minutes to 30 minutes and hardly asked anything important. It felt like they didn't want to give anyone a real shot, like they were judging based on culture or accent. It was just really unprofessional and rude.

The interview process was pretty intense, as you’d expect for a director-level role. I had about 5-6 interviews where they really looked at both hard and soft skills. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary or inappropriate, thankfully. What really stood out was the absence of arrogance or pretentious attitudes, which you sometimes encounter in the tech or cybersecurity world and can be a sign of a toxic environment. Everyone I spoke with was genuinely interested in what I could bring to specific parts of the role, rather than trying to impress me with how smart they were. The whole process made me feel truly considered, not deflated. Nobody seemed to be looking for my breaking point; the interviews were just refreshing. The intensity came from the questions themselves, which really pushed me to discuss my understanding of specific technologies, practices, and challenges, but it was done in a very good and disarming way – genuinely refreshing.

This was my most disappointing interview experience. A recruiter reached out because my cybersecurity background seemed like a good fit. I went through five interviews over six weeks, which included two portfolio reviews and a design challenge. In the end, they said my work samples weren't complex or polished enough, which I feel they should have noticed early on from my portfolio. I've never had an employer ask a UX candidate for more than one portfolio review and a design challenge. It was also a red flag that I never met an engineer or product manager, just design team members. Typically, you'd meet UX/Product/Engineering. I feel strung along after investing so much time and energy into five interviews, only to be rejected. They also never showed me their work or demoed their product. It wasn't a balanced or respectful process, and I hope this review helps others avoid my experience with Vectra.
