First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Varo Bank.
Financial Crimes QA Specialist
I had a call with the recruiter first, then I interviewed with the hiring manager/director. After that, I had three 1:1 interviews over three days with the team, each lasting 45 minutes, 45 minutes, and 30 minutes respectively. The recruiter was great, always responding quickly and keeping me informed. The team was also really nice and asked interesting questions during the interviews.
- Can you describe how you manage challenging scenarios?
- What's your perspective on how the QA and Investigations teams should collaborate?
Staff Software Engineer
First, a recruiter call, then a call with the hiring manager. After that, an onsite interview that lasted about 4 hours and covered technical, system design, and behavioral aspects. I received an offer a few days later and accepted it the next day. However, I was then ghosted by HR and never heard from them again. It's surprising given the company's reputation for ghosting candidates, but ghosting someone after an offer is a new level of unprofessionalism. I guess I dodged a bullet. The engineers and product folks I talked to were nice, though.
- Tell me about a react coding question you encountered.
- How would you design Netflix?
Principal Software Engineer
The selection process was fair. It started with a 30-minute call with the VP or Hiring Manager, followed by three additional rounds. These rounds covered systems design, coding, and leadership aspects. However, the HR and recruitment team were terrible. I never received a response and they ignored all my follow-up emails about my application status. Their behavior was extremely unprofessional, rude, and disgusting. It seems like ghosting is a common and unpleasant experience with this company.
- Can you discuss scaling event-driven architectures?
- How comfortable are you with SQL?
- Tell me about your experience with Python.
Product Management Director
The interview process was pretty standard at first, starting with a recruiter and then the hiring manager. After that, we moved to a virtual onsite with six people. I then met with the hiring manager again, and finally, the CPO. I actually got through the first eight interviews and everything seemed really positive. But then came the interview with the CPO, and wow, that was a different experience! He didn't ask me anything about myself or my background, and he wouldn't let me ask him any questions either. I tried to start by asking about their vision and who they thought would be a good fit, but he brushed that aside and told me to answer a case question first. When I laid out how I planned to approach the case question, he got defensive, saying he knew what product management was and I shouldn't try to teach him. He then rephrased the question about why a big tech company wasn't improving user features on an old product. Even though I covered all the likely reasons like intellectual property, lack of user demand, or disappointing results, he just said my answers were poor and that he was looking for 'complacency' as the answer. He was quite dismissive of the company's achievements too. He threw another case question at me, but kept contradicting me as I tried to answer it. He seemed attentive but wasn't really listening. When I suggested ideas that challenged some features of neo banks, he ignored them and mentioned wishing people happy birthday on an app as a game-changer. He then tried to explain his idea of creating an OS for financial institutions, but when I asked for examples, he couldn't provide any. I suggested that to achieve that, they'd need to be like Mint, which really set him off, and he started ranting about how bad Mint was. In the end, he rejected my candidacy, despite the previous eight interviewers being strongly in favor.
- Can you discuss why a major established tech company might not be enhancing user features for a mature product?
- What's your perspective on the role of complacency in the context of a mature tech product?
- Could you analyze the features offered by neo banks?
