First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Varis.
Data Engineer
Had a phone screening, then a take-home test. After that, a technical interview with the Manager. Then 5 loop interviews covering general DE topics, ML, system design, and Python/SQL coding, plus behavioral questions based on their 5 C's.
- Could you explain what feature engineering is in the context of Machine Learning?
Software Engineer
It started with a recruiter screen, then an online assessment, followed by four back-to-back interviews. The first was on OOP, then two coding sessions, and finally a system design interview. The OOP interviewer was the only good one. The principal engineer was chill, we talked about solution approaches and tests. In the coding session, I gave an optimized solution but it wasn't clean, using 2 loops instead of 1. The interviewer freaked out about it, like it was the worst code ever. Probably insecure. The design session was the worst. The interviewer kept interrupting, criticizing, and offered no help, just wanted to see me sweat. Typical WITCH experience though. The last coding session was a bit different, a knowledge check on threads, parallel programming, and concurrency. I didn't know the answers. The interviewer was neutral.
- How would you print distinct characters in a string?
- Design a file converter system.
- Tell me about OOP.
Manager
Had a good chat with the recruiter for about an hour. They thought my background was a great fit. Then I spoke with the hiring manager. The interview was scheduled for an hour but only took about 25 minutes. It felt a bit like they were just going through the motions and might've already decided. I tried following up multiple times to see where I stood but never heard back, which really soured the experience. It's a mystery to me why companies ghost candidates, especially a startup that relies on convincing others to use their services.
- What's your approach for training a team when there isn't a structured training program in place?
Implementation Lead
The interview experience was really good. The team was super responsive and upfront about everything. They clearly explained expectations and future plans, and answered all my questions quickly. The onboarding process was also great, especially since the role is fully remote.
- Tell me about your domain knowledge.
- Describe your past technical experience.
