Behavioral Technical System Design Case Presentation

The interview process started with a screening call, which included pretty normal questions but lacked technical depth. This was followed by a discussion with stakeholders. Then, there was an unpaid take-home assignment that had two parts: a system design exercise and developing a monetization plan for the current platform. I actually think the last part should have been a call instead of a take-home, as the questions were vague and interacting with them would have been more helpful.

Behavioral Presentation

It was a pretty simple interview process. Started with a phone screen, then an initial interview, followed by a team interview, and then I had to give a product presentation. The presentation was about some products I'd managed before, covering what went well, what didn't, and the lessons learned.

Behavioral Technical Coding

Started with a long chat with the CTO, meant for 45 mins but went for an hour. Lots of general questions about architecture and leadership. The CTO gave off some red flags: he blamed past issues on previous engineers and talked about how the current team was a tight-knit group of old friends who wouldn't welcome change. It was weird because he mentioned the old team was fired. I decided to do the next step, a simple sample project. The CTO then said my code was great but they wouldn't move forward because of 'culture issues'. I hadn't spoken to anyone else on the team. It felt like a new CTO got rid of the old team and brought in his buddies. The job posting was misleading.

Behavioral Presentation

Years ago, when Vangst was just a few employees, I interviewed to be a recruiter. After an initial interview, I was told they wanted to make an offer, but weren't yet in a position to do so from a funding perspective. In the meantime, I was asked to come help the founder and another recruiter run an all day hiring event, unpaid, under the guise that this would lead to a full time role in the near to immediate future. After a full day of free work, it never did. I was sent an email later saying they still weren't in a position to hire someone after all, and would be in touch. They never were, and I was never offered compensation. Pretty gross.
