First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Utah Department of Workforce Services.
Supervisor
Got a call from an office specialist to set up an interview. Then, I was invited to a remote video panel interview with some upper management folks. They wanted me to talk about my qualifications and some behavior-based stuff. When they asked about my management style, I mentioned building on current successes and fostering a positive culture without micromanaging. They cut me off and said the team is experienced, used to their ways, and wouldn't welcome changes from someone with less experience. That really highlighted the agency's culture to me, kind of shutting down modern management ideas. Explains the high turnover, I guess.
- Could you introduce yourself and explain your qualifications for this role?
- Describe your approach to management.
- How would you handle a team that is set in its ways and resistant to new approaches?
Employment Counselor
It was a panel interview with 3 interviewers. You really need to be prepared and know your stuff! Make sure you have specific examples ready. They give you the questions when you arrive and 15 minutes to write out your specific examples and experience to answer them. You get to keep the page with the questions and your answers when you go into the interview. They are looking for quality, descriptive, and specific answers, not just off-the-cuff responses. They used to give a math and reading test, but I'm not sure if they still do. It took a while to hear back and start the job, so don't get discouraged if you don't hear anything for about a week.
- Could you tell us, in Spanish, what you know about our services, our mission, and the population we serve?
Employment Counselor
The interviewers, typically 3 or 4 on the panel, will give you the questions 20-30 minutes beforehand. Your performance will be evaluated on how well you apply the 'SAR' system, a variation of STAR. For each question, you need to outline the situation, the action you took, and the result. This structured approach is key, as stronger adherence to the SAR model, combined with good presentation and interpersonal skills, significantly increases your chances of getting the job. Many candidates struggle with this model, leading to lower scores. The evaluation focuses heavily on your ability to clearly articulate the situation, your actions, and the subsequent results.
- Is using the SAR model something you expected?
Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor
It was a panel interview with three interviewers in a conference room, and they each took turns asking questions. They even printed out the questions for me to see 15 minutes before. I didn't get an offer, but it was a pretty good experience overall.
- Why are you interested in being a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor, and can you share your relevant experience and qualifications?
- Describe a situation where you didn't follow through on a commitment at a past job.
- Can you share an experience of working with a challenging client?
